A Sunderland housing association has gained a gold star for its people management skills.
Gentoo Group scored the gold standard from Investors in People (IiP), following an assessment of its approach to improving how it supports its workforce and the effectiveness of its leaders.
IiP assesses organisations on how they improve and support their workforce and the effectiveness of their leaders.
Over the summer the organisation carried out a detailed assessment of Gentoo. The process took in surveys, interviews, meetings and observations with staff, resulting in the housing association earning official Gold accreditation for its high performance.
Gentoo was commended for what IiP said was the genuine commitment of its leaders, its focus on rewarding and recognising its workforce, and for providing opportunities for staff to steer the direction of the business through a newly formed employee forum.
This isn’t the only accolade Gentoo has received for its approach recently. In July, the group also achieved Living Wage Employer status from the Living Wage Foundation.
The real Living Wage, which is higher than the national minimum wage, is a wage rate directly linked to the cost of living and is paid voluntarily by organisations. Through this accreditation, Gentoo has committed to paying all of its employees a Living Wage and to ensuring its third-party contracted and sub-contracted partners do the same.
“This is great news for Gentoo as people are at the heart of our business,” said Gentoo chief executive, Nigel Wilson.
“Investors in People has recognised the hard work we’ve put in to ensure our workforce has a say in the future of Gentoo, and that all colleagues have the opportunity to learn and develop in their roles.
“Our Living Wage Employer status means we not only pay our workforce a fair wage but that we can encourage our supply chain to the same.
“Having a dedicated, engaged workforce means we’re better able to provide top-quality services to our tenants, so the ongoing support of our people is vital to Gentoo.”
