A new social media campaign is getting underway to send a message to incoming Prime Minister Boris Johnson telling him just what our region can achieve with the right housing policy.
The Northern Housing Consortium (NHC) has launched its #OurNorth campaign to highlight the work councils and housing associations are doing across the regions of the North.
From tomorrow, as Johnson settles in to his first full day as PM, its members are being urged to take part in the campaign by sharing their case studies and success stories on social media.
But it’s not just about shouting the North’s praises; the campaign also wants to demonstrate to the new Government just what it must do to “deliver housing policy that really works for the North”.
“Northern people and places are ambitious – we just need access to the tools to do the job,” said an NHC spokesperson.
Tracy Harrison, NHC’s chief executive, added: “With a new prime minister in post, and a spending review expected to follow, it is an important time to make the case for housing in the North. #OurNorth is about celebrating the great homes and places being created by our members, and highlighting the changes we need from Boris Johnson to make housing policy work for the North.”
NHC says there are three key things the Prime Minister must do, and over the coming months the organisation says it aims to develop on the details as the campaign progresses. These are for Johnson’s government to:
- Enable the North to raise the quality of existing housing stock through a flexible regeneration fund
- Expand the affordable homes programme and ensure it continues to support the North to create “great homes and places”
- Create capacity in our region’s councils to realise their housing ambitions
The spokesperson added: “Councils and housing associations have ambitious plans to boost the number of homes we build, and the quality of our existing homes. #OurNorth is about celebrating what’s already happening – and highlighting the changes that would enable us to go further and realise our ambitions.”
NHC intends to feature a selection of case studies shared during the campaign in a publication which will be sent to Northern MPs and other parliamentarians in the Autumn.
