Acis begins work on new homes in Barnsley’s Wombwell

WORK is underway to develop new homes in Wombwell, near Barnsley in Yorkshire.

Social housing provider Acis has teamed up with Strategic Team Group (STG) to build 60 new homes on the site of the old Oakfield Junior School in Wombwell.

The start of construction work was marked with an official ground breaking ceremony at the site earlier this month.

Representatives from Acis, STG and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council attended the event to hear how the development will provide high-quality affordable homes to the community.

Children from the neighbouring Kings Oak Primary School also attended to see the start of the development (main picture). Acis said it will be working with the school through its community engagement initiatives.

The new development has the financial backing of Homes England. It will consist of 60 homes, including 20 for outright sale, 24 available on a shared ownership basis and a further 16 for “affordable” rent.

This is a first venture into the area for Acis, which owns and manages more than 7,000 properties across the Midlands and North of England.

“We’re delighted to officially begin work on the site to bring new affordable homes to Wombwell,” said Greg Bacon, Acis’ chief executive. “It’s a great opportunity for us to grow and continue make our services available across South Yorkshire.”

Andrew Poyner, STG’s development and legal director, said: “This much-needed development will account for around one fifth of the Acis pipeline for 2018/2019, and as such we are very pleased to be such a significant delivery partner to their programme.”
