A social landlord is set to invest £600,000 to refurbish a supported housing scheme for homeless families in Middlesbrough.
Thirteen Group is working with Esh Property Services to transform the flats at Penrith Road. New kitchens and bathrooms will be installed, along with new doors and windows throughout.
The project will also provide new flooring, electrical re-wiring and an upgrade to the fire safety systems. Communal areas will also be refurbished. Work begins at the end of this month.
The housing provider’s design and delivery team held a consultation event, where they took along choices of kitchens, bathrooms and options for the communal area, to allow staff members and residents to give their views.
“It’s important that we meet the staff and customers before we carry out investment work, so that we can involve them, talk to them and offer them the choices available,” said project manager, Stuart Poulter.
“No matter whether it’s a temporary home, like the accommodation at Penrith Road, or a home people may live in for many years, it’s vital that we continue to invest and maintain the standard of our properties.”
Support service team leader Jill Leech added: “These improvements will make a real difference to our customers and we’re all looking forward to seeing the transformation.”
The service, which has been provided for 25 years, offers accommodation for young people and families at what can be a very difficult time in their lives.
Penrith Road provides 12 two-bedroom and two three-bedroom flats with access to a communal area, laundry facilities and outside play area. A crash pad is also available for homeless 16 and 17 year olds for a maximum stay of four weeks.
Staff members are available 24 hours per day. The service provided helps residents to move on to full independence, giving them the skills to successfully manage their future permanent tenancy.
