A north east housing provider has appointed a local SME builder to deliver 12 new “affordable” rent to buy homes in Peterlee, County Durham.
County Durham Housing Group (CDHG) has awarded the contract to builder T Manners & Sons, based in Bishop Auckland, to build the dozen family sized homes on vacant land at Matterdale Road.
The homes represent a small part of CDHG’s £54 million newbuild programme, which is intended to build around 545 properties over the next few years.
“The Matterdale Road project will be our first in the Peterlee area to begin work on site. We should be seeing shovels in the ground within weeks,” said Tom Winter, CDHG’s development manager.
“The new homes have been conceived to closely match demand in this part of Peterlee. The Rent to Buy opportunities will help local families move up the housing ladder, in an affordable way, and contribute towards the long-term future of the community.”
Rent to Buy is a government scheme designed to “ease the transition” from renting to buying a home by offering rents usually set at around 80% of the local market rate.
The Matterdale Road development is the third newbuild project to be undertaken by T Manners & Sons Ltd for CDHG. The company has already completed bungalows for the group in St Helen Auckland and the remote Weardale village of Rookhope earlier this year.
Simon Manners, joint managing director of the family-owned company, said. “We are delighted to continue our relationship with County Durham Housing Group by developing these new homes.”
Work on CDHG’s “affordable” housing programme began during 2017 and will continue into 2021. The properties are said to be helping to meet demand for affordable homes in communities stretching from rural Weardale to the Durham coast.
Tenants will move into the new homes in Matterdale Road during 2019, the organisation said.
