Lakeside Rise makes a splash in Doncaster

THE first “affordable” housing development in Askern, Doncaster, has been hailed a success by local civic leaders.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, joined representatives of Together Housing Group (THG), Strategic Team Group (STG), and local ward members at Lakeside Rise, to mark it becoming a neighbourhood rather than a scheme; all the rented properties are now occupied, and the shared ownership homes are reserved.

The 60-home development consists of 52 two- and three-bedroom houses for rent and eight three-bedroom houses for sale.

A 25% share of a three-bedroom house is available from £32,499, THG said, which it claims has enabled first-time buyers to get on the property ladder.

“Across the country we’re witnessing towns and villages dying as rocketing house prices are driving young people away. This has a knock-on effect on vital community services such as post offices, schools and pubs, which are being forced to close their doors,” said Hilary Brady, the housing provider’s head of development.

“Affordable housing can breathe life into these communities, by bringing new customers and job opportunities that help keep open local facilities that residents rely on. I’m delighted that we are able to contribute positively to a thriving town with the introduction of Lakeside Rise.”

Mayor Ros Jones added: “We are committed to providing a range of new homes which suit all budgets and personal circumstances. This new affordable housing development in Askern is another prime example of how we are delivering for Doncaster residents. It’s not been without its challenges, but it proves what can be achieved when you work together.

“It is a place where young families can put down roots and can grow together as a community, as well as supporting the local economy.”

Andrew Watson, STG’s managing director, said: “It was a pleasure working with THG’s delivery team on another much-needed residential scheme in the area. We very much look forward to continuing to work with THG on our other current live schemes, and further supporting THG on their delivery aspirations over the coming years on new land-led opportunities.”

The development was completed by STG on behalf of Synergy Housing, part of the Together Housing Group, in partnership with Doncaster Council. Funding was provided by Homes England, with additional services by Nicol Thomas and Acanthus WSM Architects.
